An All-Japanese Mash-Up

Read this article in today's Sunday New York Times.

ATHOUGH the Japantown area of San Francisco has remained largely static since the 1970s — stretches of concrete, blocky mini-malls and lots of sushi restaurants — a new wave of Japanese popular culture, from monster movies to Lolita dresses, has hit the area, thanks to the recent arrival of New People, a five-level, glass-walled, 20,000-square-foot shrine to all things Japanese.

Opened last August, New People (1746 Post Street; 415-525-8630; newpeopleworld.com) is a modern mash-up of culture, art, design and fashion. It has a ground-floor cafe that serves vegan doughnuts, Blue Bottle Coffee and bento boxes by Delica, the upscale Japanese deli. The next two floors are dedicated to merchandise, specializing in items rarely found outside Japan; one level carries a wide selection of books, stationery, music and other goods, including skinny silk neckties ($139) from the Japanese brand Giraffe and hand-printed postcards ($2.25) by the popular Tokyo-based artist Yuki Koishikawa.

The second level is mostly devoted to three permanent labels — Black Peace Now; Sou-Sou; and Baby, the Stars Shine Bright — that are all big players in Tokyo street fashion and run from punk-rock goth to Lolita schoolgirl chic. An additional rotating boutique space introduces other works to Western audiences, including a line of white ceramic pins and rings that sprout live moss ($190) by the jewelry designers On Za Line, and whimsical line drawings by Noritake, an artist who collaborates with fashion houses and magazines in Japan.

Milky Berry One-piece (Black) by Angelic Pretty

Angelic Pretty's featured series for June 2010 is a strawberry-inspired print with a cream dessert border. White polka dots help give the print a bit of a retro 1950's look. Original lace is used to help detail the print. The one-piece version includes a fully shirred back. The OP also comes in black, white, pink and mint. take a look at this review of Milky Berry.

I adore the design of the dress and the gorgeous print. The border may be a bit much but it is sooooo darling and cute. it is just sad that Angelic Pretty does not sell these gorgeous dresses for tall girls.

Floral Prints

Jim - Thanks for the compliments about how good I look in floral prints. Here are some of my favorite floral prints. There are others that I will post eventually. You can see some of them in My Galleria.

It did get me thinking about why I naturally gravitate to floral designs. The first reason is that floral prints are definite a staple in the girly-girl closet. Beyond floral dresses and skirts floral accessories (head bows, flower pins, flowers on shoes) all add to a fashionable and feminine look. I found this wonderful short post on "How to wear a Floral Print". Check it out, girls.

Bows and Bags - Juicy Couture

I just adore bows. On dresses, on skirts, on handbags, on almost everything. Juicy Store.

I'm not sure if this is just a recent trend because there are so many lovely and gorgeous examples of handbags and bows.
Bows on handbags reveal the feminity and look-at-me side of them. Just don’t overdone it..or else, it’ll look desperetaly-looking-for-attention.

Betsey Johnson Handbag, Bow-tiful Sequin Oversized Clutch

The Marc by Marc Jacobs RTW Spring 2010 collections.

Kate Spade Bow Group Mirra Clutch

Chloe Bow Bags

Angelic Pretty Bow hangbags

All of the gorgeous bow handbags got me thinking about what is the minimum number of styles of handbags a woman should have. More on that in a future blog posting.

Tragedy in the Gulf

It is impossible for me to remain silent any more. I'm mad as hell and getting madder. Today just made it all even worse! The human and environmental impact of BP's negligence is overwhelming. Beyond the imagination. Just devastating. For example:

Environmental Impact
The cord-grass marshes of south Louisiana are nurseries for baby shrimp, stalking grounds for blue crabs, and barriers that slow down waves before they bite off more of the mainland. They are now defenseless sponges for sticky, dark oil. Among the animals that live along the Gulf Coast, this is the time for hatching and rearing: Species as diverse as pelicans, shrimp and alligators are all reproducing, or preparing to. That could bring sensitive young animals in contact with toxic oil or cause their parents to plunge into oily waters looking for food. Just look at these photos.

Health Impact
Concerns over the health effects of the spill grew this week as more workers and residents of the coastal areas reported symptoms such as headaches and problems breathing. So far, about 60 exposure-related complaints have been filed with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Here is more.

Add to that the lost jobs in the fishing, travel and other local support businesses. Imagine what affect that has on the psyche of gulf residents.

The impact of all this in human and ecological terms is criminal negligence against the residents of the Gulf Coast. The was NOT just an "accident" on the part of BP.

Congressman to BP: "I apologize"
It's hard to believe, but Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) just apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward.
Worse, this senior member of Congress called the real tragedy of the Gulf oil disaster not the hundreds of thousands of livelihoods destroyed, but that BP can be subjected to a "shakedown" -- referring to the funds BP has promised to pay back Gulf Coast victims.
"I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday. I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown."
This is a jaw-dropping reminder that some in Congress are still willing to carry water for even the worst of the worst offenders, despite the fact that their actions threaten our way of life and a livable environment. See the video.

But he is not the only Republican who is beholden to the oil companies. Here are more examples.
The day before Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) said the following:
Barton's comments -- he later retracted his apology and also apologized for using the word "shakedown" -- came a day after Price, through his role as chairman of the conservative House Republican Study Committee, used similar terms to criticize the administration's handling of the BP escrow fund.
"BP’s reported willingness to go along with the White House’s new fund suggests that the Obama administration is hard at work exerting its brand of Chicago-style shakedown politics," Price said in a statement late Wednesday. A spokesman for Price pointed out that unlike Barton, Price never apologized to BP, but declined to comment further or make Price available for comment.

Congresswoman Michele Bachman (R-Mn) worries that BP will get fleeced. "They shouldn't have to be fleeced and made chumps to have to pay for perpetual unemployment and all the rest — they've got to be legitimate claims. 'The other thing we have to remember is that Obama loves to make evil whatever company it is that he wants to get more power from. He makes them evil, and what we've got to ask ourselves is: Do we really want to be paying $9 for a gallon of gas? Because that could be the final result of this.' "

If you don't think that is moronic enough here are recent quotes from Rush Limbaugh.

  • This spill is nothing more than an opportunity for the left to continue to attack this country and to attack the people that make this country work."
  • "It's natural. It's as natural as the ocean water is. Well, the turtles may take a hit for a while, but so what?" and... "Sea water is pretty tough stuff... oil has a tough time surviving."
  • "Environmentalist wackos blew up the Deepwater Horizon"
  • "When do we ask the Sierra Club to pay for this leak?"

Need I say more? I'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!

Katy Perry at the Grammys

I happen to be one the people who enjoy Katy Perry's music and videos. I think she is very cute and has a wonderful creative streak. I actually saw her in concert last year. She puts on a great show. So I thought it was very amusing the rumors and scuttlebutt about her in the press. Must be doing great things for her career. She has a new album coming out called "Teenage Dream".

What's funny about all this is that people seem to be obsessed about her breasts. This article is an interview with her titled, "Katy Perry's Breasts Are 100 Percent 'Genuine and Untouched". Katy is furious at suggestions that she has had work done on her boobs. "How could people think these are fake? Look at 'em. Ask them! They are as real as real can be," she ranted. The singer even revealed her breasts are "One hundred per cent genuine and untouched... well sort of."

This is way too funny! "Thank God for Katy Perry's Breasts" "Every time before I go on stage, or go out where I know there will be a lot of press, I take a skipping rope and spend about ten minutes, fully clothed, skipping," Perry reveals. "I look like Rocky. This way I can ensure that everything is firmly in place and I won't have a wardrobe malfunction...Don't want those boulders doing a show of their own."

Paris and Katy at MTV Movie awards

Katy Perry performed her new California Gurls song at the MTV Movie Awards last week. it probably won't be too long before she does another amazing video of her latest smash hit.

There was lots of hype surrounding Katy Perry's performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards -- mostly because the singer had promised to appear naked on stage. Frankly, I thought that that was just what is said it was - hype. Read about it here.

This photo was taken after the MTV Movie Awards. Paris Hilton got to party with Katy Perry, who hosted the post-awards bash at Las Palmas in Hollywood. Also take a look at the full photo recap from the awards. Lots of gorgeous fashions. Here are some of my favorites.

MAC Brush Finder

MAC cosmetic brushes are my favorites. I have replaced most of my brushes with those from MAC. There is a great interactive online site called "Brush Finder" to help you find just what you need.

Every woman's guide to makeup brushes is worth a detailed read. As women we will spend countless dollars on our cosmetics, and use any old thing lying around in our drawers to apply them, not really knowing any different. Furthermore, using the correct brush for your application made of quality materials will make your application more even and easier to apply. When purchasing makeup brushes I have learned that the best ones are handmade.

Another good alternative for makeup brushes and accessories is Sephora. There is always someone there who can help you choose what you need.

I strongly recommend that you visit your local MAC or Sephora store for some professional help to find the perfect set of quality brushes to help make you look gorgeous!

In closing there are also some good You Tube tutorials on the topics of what makeup brushes a girl requires.

A sampling of the gorgeous fashions in Italy (storefront view) from my recent trip. They do fashion right! It did seem that the national outfit for women was tight jeans and stiletto heels. More on that in a future blog posting.
